How To Become An Official

2021-2025 Playing Rule Change Summary

Period and Penalty Length Policy Updated for 2023-2024 Season

Message from Mike Shapey, NYSAHA Official's Referee-In-Chief

August 16, 2022

TO ALL NYSAHA OFFICIALS

As the summer of 2022 is nearing its end that means, of course, that the hockey season is getting ready to start.  Teams have been practicing for weeks already and are eager to get going.  Whether you are a brand-new Level 1 Official or a veteran Level 4 Official, you cannot start working games until all of your "homework" is done.  I can guarantee you that by the end of August there will be a huge amount of games that will need officials. Don't be that official who just couldn't get it together and will be standing on the side looking in.

If you are in need of a seminar we have in person and virtual seminars for all levels...please get your name on a list!  For those returning officials, although USA Hockey did not make any playing rule changes going into this coming season, please be sure to brush up, especially those of you who work several different leagues.

Please note that if you feel that you are being treated rudely by a coach or even a trainer, feel free to remove that person from the game via a game misconduct penalty.  I can assure you that the NYSAHA Board of Directors has your back and your claim will be treated quickly and professionally.

I hope all of you have a great and successful season.

Mike Shapey, NYSAHA Referee in Chief
