Skill Development/Cross Ice Program

Dear Hockey Administrator:

On this web page you will find the NYS Cross Ice/ Skill Development Program information. This manual will give your association administrators all the resources they need to implement a successful developmental mite and cross ice program.  The information in the manual is extensive and comprehensive and will enhance the skill development of the players involved in your program.

In addition to the manual, you will find two forms that MUST be filled out and returned no later than October 15th.  The first form is a registration form declaring your organization as a Tier I or II tournament bound association. The information in the form is used by the NYSAHA to determine if your association is in compliance with the Cross Ice Skill Development Program requirements as outlined on page 60 of the NYSAHA Guidebook.  A failure to declare your program with the State Cross Ice Coordinator may result in a suspension of the organization’s tournament bound status and could make all teams ineligible for post season competition. The second form is a Skill Development Program and Cross-Ice Survey.  This form provides us with specific details about your local program and what you offer to younger players in order to develop their skills.

The goal of the NYSAHA is to help organizations better understand the philosophy of the Cross-Ice / Skill Development Program and to keep up with national trends regarding Skill Development.  This is of the utmost importance as USA Hockey prepares to unveil the details of its new American Development Model program. .

The Skill Development Program

Welcome to the NY State version of USA Hockey's Skill Development Program!!!! If you don't already know, the Skill Development Program is a FUN program designed for the beginning player ages 8 years old and under, and will introduce them to the cross ice program. This USA Hockey sponsored program uses a nationally developed curriculum to teach your players the basic skills needed to play and enjoy hockey. The program is flexible enough to be adapted to the needs of any local program....

Cross Ice Program

To increase participation and improve skills with the Skill Development Program and the 8 and under players USA Hockey has introduced the Cross Ice Program. The Cross Ice Program is meant to increase skills by playing cross ice rather than on a full ice surface. The NYSAHA SKD Coordinators will continue to educate players, coaches, and administrators across New York State on the cross ice program. It is also required that the 4oz blue puck be used in the SKD and cross ice program to better develop the skills of puck handling, passing and shooting for the 8 and under players. The program is flexible enough to be adopted to the needs of any local program.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey regarding the Cross Ice Jamboree. Your feedback is importatant to the program. Complete the survey and e-mail it to Joe Trimarchi.

What Do You Get When You Get Involved In This Program???

TRAINING
For your organization to become an SKD/Cross Ice user you need to send your instructors to be trained. They attend an 8 hour clinic that includes an on-ice segment. The clinic is the first step in CEP training. The cost of a clinic is $40 per person. Clinics are held periodically around the state. Topics covered in the clinics include Leadership, Communication, Teaching Skills, Lesson Organization, Skill Analysis, and Safety.

LESSON PLANS & MATERIALS
Instructors attending a clinic not only receive the training, but also they receive an Instructors Manual that highlights the topics covered in the training clinic. In addition, they receive 4 progressive Lesson Plan Manuals that contain a total of 80 complete, detailed lesson plans that are easily adapted for use in your local organization.

FEE WAIVERS, PLAYER AWARDS
Instructors that complete the training receive more than the manuals. They also are entitled to a coaches fee waiver when filling out USA Hockey Individual Member Registration forms. Players benefit as well!! All organizations using a certified Initiation Program can receive FREE patches and certificates from USA Hockey. These awards are valuable as an incentive for all young players!
